Debt relief options in Australia, compared

There is no single "debt relief program" in Australia. There are four ways to deal with unsecured debt, and the right one depends on how much you owe, what you can afford each fortnight, and whether you own assets. Here is how they compare.

Features Informal debt arrangement Debt management plan Part 9 debt agreement Debt consolidation
What it is We negotiate directly with each creditor for reduced or paused repayments A single budgeted repayment we distribute to your creditors A formal agreement under the Bankruptcy Act 1966 with a legally binding repayment Existing debts refinanced into one new facility
Best for Short-term hardship, a few creditors Several debts, income to repay them in full over time Debts you cannot repay in full; interest needs to stop Good repayment history, needs a lower rate
Interest Often paused by agreement Continues unless creditors agree otherwise Frozen for the life of the agreement Continues at the new rate
Legally binding on creditors Cross Icon Red  No Cross Icon Red  No Checked Icon Green Yes, once accepted N/A
Assets Kept Kept Kept (unsecured debts only) Kept
Typical debt range $8,000+ $8,000+ $8,000–$150,000 Depends on lender
Every option starts the same way: a free assessment where we list your debts, your income and your budget, then show you which of these you qualify for and what the repayment would be. You decide.

Debt Management Plans

A debt management plan (DMP) is the middle path most people don't know exists. Instead of juggling six due dates, you make one repayment to Debt Fix, and we distribute it to your creditors on a schedule they have agreed to. It suits people who can repay what they owe but need it structured and need the collection calls to stop.

What changes on day one: creditors deal with us, not you. What doesn't change: you keep your assets and your bank accounts. A plan is reviewed with you every six months so it keeps matching your income.

Part 9 Debt Agreements

A Part 9 debt agreement (also written Part IX) is a formal alternative to bankruptcy for people whose unsecured debts have grown past what they can repay. It is regulated under the Bankruptcy Act 1966 and lodged with the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA). Debt Fix is a Registered Debt Agreement Administrator (RDAA 1027), which means we are authorised to propose and administer these agreements.

In plain terms: your unsecured debts are combined into one affordable repayment, interest is frozen, and creditors are legally bound to the agreement once a majority in value accept it. Eligibility depends on income, assets and debt thresholds set by AFSA, which is why we check it in the assessment rather than guess.

Debt consolidation, and when it isn't the answer

Most people searching for debt help start by looking at a debt consolidation loan. Sometimes that is right: if your repayment history is good and you can get a lower rate, one loan replacing several can save money. Sometimes it isn't: if you have been declined, or the new rate is higher, or the loan only covers part of what you owe, you've added a debt rather than solved one.

We look at both. If consolidation fits, we can arrange it under our Australian Credit Licence. If it doesn't, we show you the no-loan options above. Debt consolidation options

How to get out of debt: the five steps we walk through with you

Process 1

List every debt

Creditor, balance, interest rate, minimum repayment. Most people are surprised by the total; that is the point

Process 2

Set the budget you can actually keep

Income minus essentials. The repayment has to fit this number, not the other way round.

Process 3

Match the debts to an option

Small, short-term shortfall: informal arrangement. Repayable over time: debt management plan. Unrepayable in full: Part 9 agreement. Good credit, high rates: consolidation.

Process 4

Let one party deal with the creditors

Whichever option you choose, creditor contact moves to Debt Fix. Collection calls stop being your job.

Process 5

Review every six months

Income changes, so the plan should too.

What Debts Can We Help With?

Not included in a debt agreement: mortgages and car loans (secured debts), HECS-HELP, child support, and court fines. If you have a mix, we can still help with the unsecured part and explain what happens to the rest.

FAQs – about debt Relief help in Australia

The best debt help depends on whether you can repay what you owe. If you can, a debt management plan or informal arrangement structures it. If you can't, a Part 9 debt agreement combines your unsecured debts into one affordable repayment with interest frozen. Debt Fix assesses all of these for free and tells you which you qualify for.

There is no government $10,000 debt relief payment. "$10,000 debt relief Australia" usually refers to the minimum debt level at which formal options like a Part 9 debt agreement become practical. Debt Fix works with unsecured debts from $8,000 upward, and the assessment is free.

Debt consolidation replaces several debts with one new loan; you still owe the full amount plus interest. Debt relief options such as a Part 9 debt agreement reduce what you repay or freeze interest without a new loan. Debt Fix arranges both and will tell you which suits your situation.

It depends on the option. Informal arrangements are agreements with creditors and are not a formal listing. A Part 9 debt agreement is recorded on the National Personal Insolvency Index and your credit file for a set period. We explain exactly what applies to you before you decide anything.

Yes. Once you engage Debt Fix, creditor and collector contact moves to us for the debts we are managing. Under a Part 9 agreement, creditors are legally bound to the agreed repayment and cannot pursue you separately for those debts.

The assessment is free and there are no upfront fees. If you proceed with a debt agreement or plan, administration fees are built into the single repayment and disclosed before you sign. You will never be asked to pay to find out your options.

The assessment takes a few minutes. An informal arrangement can be in place within days. A Part 9 debt agreement typically takes four to six weeks from proposal to creditor acceptance.

Yes. Income from Centrelink counts as income in an assessment. Which options fit depends on the amount and your debts; an informal arrangement or a small debt agreement is often workable.

No. A Part 9 debt agreement is a formal alternative to bankruptcy under the same Act. You keep your assets, you repay an agreed amount, and it ends when the agreement is completed. Bankruptcy is a separate process with different consequences, which we can also explain.

Secured debts (mortgage, car loan), HECS-HELP, child support and court fines cannot go into a debt agreement. Unsecured debts — credit cards, personal loans, BNPL, utilities, medical bills, rental arrears — can.

No. Debt Fix works Australia-wide by phone, email and online. The assessment, the paperwork and the creditor negotiation all happen without a visit.

No. Debt Fix is a private company licensed by ASIC (Australian Credit Licence 393436) and registered with AFSA as a Debt Agreement Administrator (RDAA 1027). Free government-funded financial counselling is also available in Australia through the National Debt Helpline if you would like to compare.
